Torrent Power bags 12 GWh Indian pumped hydro storage project
Torrent Power Ltd has received a Letter of Intent from Indian utility MSEDCL for the procurement of 1.5 GW/12 GWh of energy storage capacity from a pumped hydro storage project.
MSEDCL will procure the capacity from a planned Torrent Power pumped hydro storage project, for 40 years.
Torrent plans to supply the storage capacity from its pumped hydro plant in the Raigad District of Maharashtra state. Under the energy storage agreement, Torrent will supply MSEDCL from its 1.5 GW plant with a scheduled discharge of eight hours (including a maximum five continuous hours) per day. The input energy for charging will be provided by MSEDCL.
Increased penetration of solar and wind power in India’s power mix will create a need for energy storage solutions to provide firm, reliable, dispatchable clean power. Torrent has identified pumped hydro storage project sites in multiple states. The company intends to install around 5 GW to 8 GW of project capacity, entailing investment of INR 25,000 crore ($2.99 million) to INR 35,000 crore. As part of its growth strategy, Torrent is also working on green hydrogen and green ammonia production projects.
