Spain’s Rolwind gets environmental nod for 885 MWh standalone battery
Andalusian clean energy company Rolwind has announced it has obtained a favourable EIS from MITECO for a standalone energy storage project. The 200 MW/885 MWh ST Palmosilla project, inland from Tarifa, Cádiz, will supply energy to the grid for four consecutive hours.
Rolwind said the project will achieve several milestones including being the largest battery energy storage project of its kind in Spain and obtaining the first EIA awarded by MITECO to a standalone storage project.
Rolwind had announced, in 2021, the development of a 150 MW solar-plus-storage project in Huelva which is owned by Matrix Renewables. In the same year, the developer had a portfolio of 2 GW of photovoltaic projects at different stages of development with the objective of having 5 GW by 2027.
The Spanish company, based in Córdoba and created in 2006, claimed to have agreements related to more than 9,000 hectares throughout the Iberian peninsula for the development of renewables projects and more than 5,000 hectares under negotiation.
In July 2021, Rolwind extended its agreement with Matrix Renewables to develop “a significant number of gigawatts [of projects]” in Spain.
