The three-day workshop began with a tour of Huawei’s Digital Power Watt Exhibition Hall, Smart O&M Management Center, Wireless RRU Production Line, BESS Testing Lab, and Songshan Lake Manufacturing Center, where attendees experienced the company’s state-of-the-art facilities and stringent safety protocols firsthand. On the second day of the event, Steve Zheng, President of Utility Smart ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, delivered a welcome speech highlighting Huawei’s dedication to advancing BESS safety and technology in renewable energy. Zheng emphasized the essential role BESS plays in supporting global clean energy transitions by storing renewable energy and maintaining grid stability. He underscored Huawei Digital Power’s commitment to prioritizing safety and resilience, essential to preventing incidents that could impact both individuals and power infrastructure.

The workshop featured a distinguished lineup of experts, including Zhuang Shuang, CTO & Senior Researcher of Tianjin Fire Science and Technology Research Institute Test Center; Ho Victor, Fire Safety Consultant of HiLT Pte Ltd and Council member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Singapore; Stanley Zhang Chenyu, Executive Engineer of HiLT Pte Ltd; Robert Liew, Research Director of Power & Renewables Research, Asia-Pacific at Wood Mackenzie; Rizwan Razaq, CTO of Huawei Digital Power Smart PV; Dr. Xin Yaozhong, President of the Industrial Control Systems Industry Alliance and Chief Expert of the China Electricity Council; Jialin (Symbol) Zhao, Senior Consultant, Energy Storage APAC of DNV; Prof. King-Jet TSENG, Fellow IEEE and Full Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Singapore Institute of Technology; Achal Sondhi, Chief Investment Officer APAC at Aquila Clean Energy APAC Pte Ltd; Raj Shailesh Kotadia, ART Solutions Parametrics & Renewables Account Manager and Vice President, Specialties of Lockton Singapore; Xun Yu, Section Manager of TÜV Rheinland Power Electronics; Dr. Ho Wai Shin, Associate Professor of UTM; Kollsman Chan, Regional CEO of Munich RE; Bing, Deputy General Manager of People’s Insurance Company of China; and Dr. Larry Wan Lei, Senior Director of EVE Power Co., Ltd. This impressive roster of speakers shared their insights and expertise, driving discussions aimed at enhancing safety standards in energy storage systems across the APAC region.

The speakers also shared case studies on large-scale projects, innovative safety solutions, and the latest applications of intelligent technologies in monitoring BESS performance. Through their expertise, they underscored the importance of rigorous safety measures, regulatory adherence, and the integration of advanced technologies, all essential for fostering a sustainable and resilient energy storage industry.

The attendees reached a consensus that energy storage solutions still carry inherent uncertainties due to their intrinsic properties, and smaller, localized safety control units enhance overall system safety. Huawei Digital Power upgrade the active safety to 2.0 with a “pack thermal runaway non-diffusion” design, implementing layered protection from the cell to the grid level. This approach combines preventive and mitigation measures to minimize the risk of thermal runaway. Additionally, by leveraging a Battery Management System (BMS) with full-chain, multi-dimensional intelligent diagnostics, Huawei significantly enhances the system’s proactive safety capabilities. This comprehensive strategy supports the sustainable development of the energy storage industry.

On the final day, a roundtable discussion allowed industry leaders to explore BESS applications across residential, C&I, and utility sectors. The attendees emphasized the importance of meeting international safety standards, which reduce operational risks and enhance investor confidence.

Huawei Digital Power’s workshop underscored its mission to collaborate on impactful solutions for the energy storage industry. By advancing safety and standardization, Huawei continues to drive innovation that supports a sustainable, resilient energy future.
