Dubai’s AMEA Power to develop 1.5 GWh standalone BESS in Egypt

Dubai-based AMEA Power has signed capacity purchase agreements (CPAs) with the Egyptian government to develop the first standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the country. The projects will have a combined capacity of 1.5 GWh, comprising a 500 MWh BESS project in Zafarana and a 1 GWh site in Benban.
The projects are expected to enhance grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix. “By deploying advanced battery storage solutions, we are not only strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure but also paving the way for a more resilient and decarbonized power sector,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power.
AMEA Power has been a key player in Egypt’s renewable energy sector, with investments exceeding $3 billion across solar, wind, and battery storage projects, bringing the company’s total capacity in the country to 2.5 GW of wind and solar projects, and 2.4 GWh of BESS.
Most recently, AMEA Power announced its technology partners on a 300 MWh BESS project which will be collocated with a 500 MW Abydos PV power plant in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate. The development was described as the first to incorporate a utility-scale BESS in Egypt when first unveiled in September 2024.
The Dubai developer is working in parallel on a new 1 GW solar PV power plant with a 600 MWh BESS in the Benban area, Egypt’s Aswan Governorate. Amea Power said the Benban site will be the largest solar-plus-BESS project in Africa. The company is investing $800 million across Benban and Abydos projects.
