Italy’s Terna expects 758 MW of energy storage, renewables in 2027 capacity market auction

Italian grid operator Terna holds its main capacity market auction for the 2027 delivery year on Wednesday. The procurement exercise aims to ensure sufficient grid capacity for that year from new generation and energy storage assets.
The national electricity TSO has estimated renewable energy generation and energy storage sites will contribute around 758 MW. That figure is given in “capacità disponibile in probabilità” (CDP), a measurement which takes into account downtime for grid-connected assets, for various reasons, and indicates Terna expects more absolute project capacity for such sites.
The northern region of the Terna grid is expected to feature 224 MW of renewables and energy storage CDP, as indicated in the table below, with Sicily set to contribute 220 MW. The southern mainland grid region of Calabria is expected to host only 22 MW of such facilities.

Terna has also published the document explaining its 2027 grid capacity parameters, based on the company’s technical operating provisions.
The grid company published the results of its 2026 Capacity Market auction, two weeks ago, revealing batteries contributed 60% of the 140 MW of new grid project capacity awarded.
The 2027 auction will include valid bids left over from the 2026 delivery year exercise.
