MACSE auction to take place on September 30, Italy’s grid company Terna says

The first Energy Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism (MACSE) auction will be launched on September 30. Francesco Del Pizzo, president for grid development strategies and dispatching at the Terna Group, said this on the sidelines of an event organized by Italian renewable energy association ANIE Rinnovabili on the last day of KEY – The Energy Transition Expo held in Rimini from March 5-7.
As reported by pv magazine Italia last week, Italian transmission system operator (TSO) Terna said that Italy’s first MACSE will be postponed until September 2025. This was leter confirmed by Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
Terna calculated Italy will need 10 GWh of energy storage capacity to maintain reliable grid electricity supply in 2028. That figure, or slightly less, will be the amount available to developers who participate in the country’s first energy storage capacity auction, known as the mercato a termine degli stoccaggi, or MACSE.
Energy storage, specifically MACSE, were the main topics at this year’s edition of KEY. Several manufacturers have confirmed strong interest in all types of BESS solutions.
