APPA’s latest monthly report showed that there is around 20 GW of energy storage-related grid demand-access requests in Spain.

The association’s latest figures indicated more than 112 GW of permitted renewable energy sites in Spain in February. Another 54.5 GW requested permits. The maximum power that renewables could inject into the grid in February stood at 142 GW.

The trade body said wind power contributed 20.2% of Spain’s electricity in February, with hydro generating 17.3% and solar 14% as clean energy amounted to 11.5 TWh for the month. Wind, however, contributed less than the 31.5% of the mix it accounted for in February 2024.

Spain’s monthly electricity demand, at 20 TWh, was down 1.2% on February 2024. The average market price for electricity rose 171%, year on year, to €108.31 ($117.26)/MWh, with an average high of €172.16/MWh at 8:00 p.m. daily and an average low of €60.21/MWh at 2:00 p.m. The month saw 29 hours with low prices of €0 to €30/MWh.

While futures prices were up, in February, for the remaining quarters of this year, they were slightly down for next year.

“Adjustment services” – electricity generation costs – were up 61.98%, year on year.

APPA reported hydroelectric reservoirs reached 60% capacity in February, down 0.92% on February 2024.

Demand for gas in the electricity sector was up 46.86%, year on year.

The association said Spain exported 1.18 TWh of electricity to France in February, 815 GWh to Portugal, 176 GWh to Morocco, and 27.5 GWh to Andorra. The nation imported 862 GWh of energy.

The Iberian renewable hydrogen production cost index was €148.02/MWh in February, according to APPA.
