The MEAG asset management division of German insurance giant Munich Re has made its first move into battery energy storage investment by acquiring one of Germany’s largest BESS.

The 92.5 MW/231 MWh project, in Metelen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is due online this year.

MEAG said the BESS acquisition would be the “prelude to further investments by MEAG in the national storage infrastructure.”

The Münsterland project was developed by the Altenso division of German inverter maker SMA. SMA Altenso will remain engineering, procurement, and construction services provider for the project and will also perform operations and maintenance.

Bavarian battery optimizer Entrix yesterday said it will market the BESS’s services on various markets on a fully non-subsidized, “merchant” basis. Entrix said the BESS’s artificial intelligence-backed operation will be fully automated across primary and secondary control power as well as day-ahead and intraday energy trading markets for a flexible response to market developments.
