Portuguese utility EDP has announced the signing of an optimization agreement which will secure it revenue from a 60 MW/241 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Poland.

The energy company, which has state-owned hydro business China Three Gorges Corporation as its biggest shareholder, announced on Monday it has signed a deal for the BESS with the Polish business of Swiss public energy company Axpo, which will act as the optimizer.

The “floor and revenue share contract” will see the partners split revenue from the site and will include an unspecified minimum revenue for EDP – the “floor” price.

The energy company, which signed the deal through its 71.3%-owned EDP Renováveis, S.A. renewables arm, said the Polish project has already secured fixed capacity payments from the grid for the network services it will provide and added, the income from its arrangement with Axpo will come on top of that.

EDP said the Polish battery is set to start commercial operation in 2027.
