Grupo Ibereólica Renovables has announced the launch of a large-scale integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across its project portfolio in Chile. According to the Spanish company, a total of 1,330 MW is currently in the permitting process.

The most significant project under development is the Antofagasta ERNC hybrid project, which combines a wind farm and a photovoltaic plant with a total generation capacity of 1,203 MW. The project includes the installation of a 990 MW BESS with a storage capacity of 4,950 MWh, equivalent to five hours of full-power discharge, positioning it among the largest renewable energy storage facilities in the country.

The Antofagasta ERNC project received environmental approval in September 2023 and is expected to begin operations in March 2027.

This initiative is complemented by the hybridization of the Cabo Leones III wind farm in the Atacama Region, which has an installed and operational capacity of 192.5 MW across its two phases. The hybridization plan includes a 170 MW BESS with a storage capacity of 680 MWh, corresponding to four hours of operation.

Finally, the Atacama wind farm in Freirina, currently operating with an installed capacity of 165.3 MW, will incorporate a 170 MW BESS providing 680 MWh of storage capacity.
