French energy company EDF Power Solutions has commissioned its first battery storage system in Poland. With a capacity of 60 MW (120 MWh), with a 50 MW grid connection, this is the country’s most powerful installation. Located in the southern city of Stary Grodków, the project is covered by a 17-year capacity contract with the Polish electricity grid operator.

The Stary Grodków battery storage system (BESS) comprises 24 modular containers provided by Sungrow. The company said these are 24 Sungrow PowerTitan 2.0 ST5015UX (AC coupled) BESS units each rated a connected to electrical infrastructure, including a substation and a 110 kV grid connection. The system was paired with 12 of Sungrow’s MVS5140 medium-voltage stations.

The commissioning of Stary Grodków is part of EDF Power Solutions ‘ strategy to develop battery storage in Poland, with several projects secured for a total capacity of 370 MW. This storage capacity will bring flexibility to the electricity grid and facilitate the integration of renewable energy production assets as part of the decarbonization of Poland’s electricity mix.

“Investments like Stary Grodków strengthen grid stability. The PGE (Polska Grupa Energetyczna) group plans to develop more than 80 battery energy storage facilities with a total capacity exceeding 10,000 MWh, which will be located next to existing substations throughout Poland,” said Miłosz Motyka, Minister of Energy.

Present in Poland for 14 years, EDF Power Solutions currently operates five onshore wind farms and is developing low-carbon power plants to support the energy transition while strengthening the electricity system through storage solutions.
