Fidra buys 1 GW UK BESS project from Innova ahead of cap-and-floor decision

Under development project in the running for UK cap-and-floor scheme support, with decision expected in summer 2026. Fidra Energy BESS development pipeline now exceeds 4.1 GW in power terms.

Fidra Energy has acquired the 1 GW Enderby battery storage project from Innova, expanding its BESS development pipeline to over 4.1 GW in the process.

Edinburgh-based Fidra Energy has purchased the in-development Enderby BESS project ahead of a final investment decision, expected in 2027. The site secured planning consent in May 2025 and is one of the large-scale BESS projects in the running for a cap-and-floor offtake agreement via a new government support scheme for long-duration energy storage (LDES).

Fidra Energy should find out if Enderby BESS has been successful in the United Kingdom’s first cap-and-floor LDES application round in summer 2026, and the developer expects to make a final investment decision on the project in 2027. Securing an LDES cap-and-floor agreement would provide Enderby BESS with government-backed, bankable long-term revenue that investors typically look for in under-development projects.

Fidra Energy has experience securing institutional backing for major projects. The developer has been backed by EIG and the UK state-owned investment vehicle the National Wealth Fund. If Fidra is able to move ahead with Enderby BESS, it is expected to deliver up to 1,025 MW of power capacity making it one of the largest battery storage projects in the United Kingdom.

Morris Van Looy, chief growth and strategy officer of Fidra Energy said the acquisition was a major milestone for the company and shows its ambition to deliver large-sale energy storage at a pace that support’s the UK government’s 2030 targets.

The UK government published its Clean Power 2030 Action Plan in December 2024, setting ambitious decarbonization targets for the electricity grid. Targets for 2030 include 23 GW to 27 GW of battery capacity, 4 GW to 8 GW of long-duration energy storage, and development of other flexibility technologies. Modo Energy recorded around 6.8 GW of BESS in Great Britain at the end of 2025.

Enderby BESS is the third utility-scale, transmission-connected battery project sold by Innova in the last 12 months. Daniel Mushin, chief finance and investment officer at Innova said the three sales combined account for over 2.4 GW of new capacity – a major contribution to 2030 targets.

The acquisition adds another gigawatt-scale project to Fidra Energy’s existing pipeline of major BESS assets. Construction is now underway at the 1.4 GW/3.1 GWh Thorpe Marsh site following a successful capital raise in 2025. Fidra Energy also expects to make a final investment decision in June 2026 on its 500 MW/1.1 GWh BESS project in West Burton, Nottinghamshire. Both sites are expected to be fully operational by 2028, according to the developer.
