Romania grants grid permits for 546 MW of solar and battery storage

Korkia, a Nordic renewable energy developer, has locked in development rights for more than 550 MW of battery storage in Romania.

Korkia has secured grid connection permits from Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica for two hybrid solar-plus-storage projects totaling 273 MW of solar capacity and 250 MW of co-located battery storage in CaraČ™-Severin County, southwestern Romania.

The permits, known as “avize tehnice de racordare,” were issued in May 2026. Korkia secured the approvals under Romania’s transitional first-come-first-served framework ahead of reforms to the country’s grid connection regime introduced in January 2026, which move toward an auction-based permitting system.

Helsinki-based Korkia said the projects are on track to reach ready-to-build status by end of 2026 and could begin generating by 2028 without requiring transmission grid reinforcements.

The Iron Gates permits follow grid connection approvals Korkia secured in March 2026 for its Alexandria portfolio – 320 MW of solar and 303 MW of battery storage in Teleorman County – bringing its Romanian portfolio with secured grid permits to nearly 600 MW of solar capacity and more than 550 MW of battery storage.

Romania has emerged as one of Central and Eastern Europe’s most active utility-scale battery storage markets, with developers including Enery, R.Power, and Toki Power advancing projects totaling several gigawatt-hours of capacity across the country.
