Acciona Energía plans 196 MW/980 MWh battery project in Chile
Acciona Energía has announced plans to build a 196 MW/980 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its 246 MWp El Romero solar plant in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
The company said the system will be able to supply electricity for five consecutive hours and is scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2027. Acciona Energía said the project will double its planned energy storage capacity in Chile.
The new installation follows a 200 MW/1 GWh BESS announced in late 2025 for the 238 MWp Malgarida solar complex, also located in the Atacama Desert and currently under construction. That project is expected to begin operating in early 2027.
Acciona Energía said the two systems will help optimize renewable energy management, shift solar generation to different hours, improve grid stability, and strengthen security of supply in the local electricity system.
El Romero Solar, which was connected to the grid in 2016, has 246 MWp of installed PV capacity and 196 MW of nominal capacity. The facility is located in the municipality of Vallenar in Chile’s Atacama region.
The company said the two storage projects will expand its Chilean portfolio, where it currently operates 922 MW across five solar plants – El Romero Solar (246 MWp), Usya (64 MWp), Almeyda (62 MWp), and Malgarida I and II (238 MWp) – and three wind farms: Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW), and Tolpán Sur (84 MW).
