A Chinese-owned European solar developer has made its first move into German battery storage with the sale of a five-project portfolio to one of the country’s largest electricity traders.

Chint Solar Europe has sold the 56 MW/180 MWh portfolio to Second Foundation, a Prague-based energy trading company that describes itself as accounting for around 8% of Germany’s continuous intraday trading volume and currently has 600 MW of BESS under construction.

The projects are located across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg, with the first already under construction and grid connection scheduled between the second quarter of 2026 and the third quarter of 2027.

Chint developed the projects to ready-to-build status and will deliver them turnkey under EPC and operations and maintenance contracts. The deal is structured as a forward COD transaction, which Chint describes as a relatively uncommon model in the German BESS market.

Chint Solar Europe said the transaction marks a strategic move toward integrated energy infrastructure and that it may offer BESS EPC services to third parties in future.
