Aquila Capital said it has secured what it described as fully merchant financing for a standalone 56 MW/112 MWh BESS at Wetzen, near Lüneburg in Lower Saxony.

ING Deutschland is providing €26 million in debt financing for the project, which Aquila said is among the first large-scale battery storage projects in Germany to secure fully market-based financing.

The battery system was developed by Aquila Clean Energy. Construction was announced in November 2024.

Aquila said the project is now progressing toward commercial operation. When construction began, commissioning was expected in early 2026.

The two-hour battery system is intended to provide frequency regulation services and participate in Germany’s wholesale electricity market.
