FRV targets 2.9 GW/11 GWh of battery storage in Italy by 2029

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) says it is developing more than 2.9 GW/11 GWh of standalone battery energy storage projects across Italy, with the portfolio expected to reach ready-to-build status between 2026 and 2029.

FRV, a renewable energy developer owned by Jameel Energy, said it plans to develop more than 2.9 GW of battery energy storage capacity in Italy, representing more than 11 GWh of storage.

The company said the portfolio is already in an advanced stage of development and is expected to reach ready-to-build status between 2026 and 2029.

The projects are spread across Sicily, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Puglia, Tuscany, Marche, Campania, Molise, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Sardinia. Sicily, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Puglia account for the largest share of planned capacity.

FRV plans five projects totaling 745 MW in Sicily, three projects totaling 663 MW in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and four projects totaling 445 MW in Puglia. The remaining 966 MW is distributed across Molise (242 MW), Lombardy (201 MW), Marche (175 MW), Tuscany (146 MW), Emilia-Romagna (96 MW), Campania (58 MW), and Sardinia (48 MW).

The projects are being developed as standalone battery storage facilities designed to provide grid services and support the electricity system.

The announcement comes as investor interest in Italy’s utility-scale storage sector continues to grow ahead of the rollout of MACSE, the storage procurement mechanism established by transmission system operator Terna to support greater renewable energy integration and expand the role of energy storage in the power system.

FRV Italy Managing Director Jaime Linares said battery storage investment can help increase renewable energy integration, strengthen grid stability, and improve the resilience of Italy’s electricity system.
