Australia approves 4,800 MWh Red Gully battery project
BLT Energy has secured development approval for the 800 MW/4,800 MWh Red Gully battery project in Western Australia, one of the country’s largest proposed energy storage developments.
Perth-based developer BLT Energy has been granted development approval for its Red Gully 800 MW/4,800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
Other major operational BESS projects in Western Australia include Neoen’s first-stage (219 MW) and second-stage (341 MW) Collie Battery, Synergy’s 200 MW/800 MWh Kwinana BESS Stage 2, and Synergy’s 500 MW/2,400 MWh Collie BESS.
Red Gully is described as the largest utility-scale BESS proposed in Western Australia, with the first phase delivering up to 400 MW of power with 2,400 MWh of storage to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).
The project, due for completion in 2027, compliments Western Australia’s Clean Energy Link – North transmission network upgrade program.

Engie Neoen has completed the first stage of its eventual 540 MW/1,080 GWh Western Downs Green Power Hub, which will also feature 400 MW of solar generation capacity. On the opposite side of the country, developer Atmos Renewables has selected a construction company for its 100 MW/400 MWh Merredin battery.
