Spain plans 112 MWh BESS as part of solar-hydrogen complex

Battery storage will play a key role in a proposed hybrid energy complex in northwestern Spain that will combine solar with renewable hydrogen production.

A hybrid energy project being developed by Ansasol subsidiary Belenus Solar in Spain’s Zamora province would combine 33 MW of solar generation, 111.8 MWh of battery storage and a 25 MW electrolyzer capable of producing up to 445 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour.

The proposed Pobladura del Valle project is designed as an integrated energy complex combining photovoltaic generation, battery storage and compressed hydrogen production.

The solar plant would have 33 MW of installed capacity and 41.96 MWp of peak capacity, using bifacial modules mounted on single-axis trackers.

The storage component would use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with 111.8 MWh of capacity and 26.625 MVA of discharge power. The installation would occupy 79.27 hectares within an overall project area of 87.47 hectares.

A 30 kV underground medium-voltage line would connect the solar array to the electrolysis facility, supplying power to electrolyzers with a combined capacity of 25 MW. The hydrogen plant would be sized to produce up to 445 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour.

The hydrogen would be stored on site using 30 pressurized vessels with a total capacity of 19.5 tonnes of compressed hydrogen.

The Pobladura del Valle development adds to a growing pipeline of hybrid renewable hydrogen projects in Spain’s Castilla y León region.

Ansasol recently secured a favorable environmental impact declaration for the Moreruela I and Moreruela II renewable hydrogen projects, also located in Zamora. Developed by subsidiaries Utu Solar and Inari Solar, the projects combine for 80 MW of electrolysis capacity and are expected to require around €180 million in investment.

Each project includes a 40 MW electrolyzer and is expected to produce 2,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually using renewable electricity. The company plans to expand output to 6,000 tonnes per year through future expansions and grid connections.

Ansasol said the hydrogen is intended to supply sectors including local heavy industry, heavy-duty road transport and derivative production over the projects’ operating lifetimes.

The company currently has more than 20 projects in various stages of development under Hydron, the green hydrogen brand it established for its hydrogen business.
