Aukera Energy brings first phase of Gura BESS online in Romania

Brussels-based developer Aukera Energy said it has switched on the first 150 MW/300 MWh phase of its Gura Ialomiței battery energy storage system (BESS) in Romania, with a second 100 MW/200 MWh phase the company expects to complete by the end of 2026.

Aukera Energy said the project, located in Ialomița County, came online within about 12 months of reaching what the company described as ready-to-build status, and marks its first operational BESS asset in Romania.

Aukera said the full Gura project will total 250 MW/500 MWh once both phases are complete, though it did not specify whether the two phases are financed under a single structure. The company said it secured a EUR 60 million debt facility from Kommunalkredit Austria AG in November 2025 in connection with the project, but did not disclose total project costs or whether the facility covers construction, development, or only part of the capital stack.

Aukera Energy said the project has received funding support through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, though it did not specify the mechanism or amount.

The company was founded in 2021 by Pascal Emsens and Catalin Breaban. It is headquartered in Brussels and develops, constructs, and operates solar, wind, and battery storage projects across multiple European markets, including the UK, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Romania.
