Italy authorizes 300 MW of battery storage projects

Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has approved three battery energy storage projects totaling 300 MW, including two developments in Campania and one in Puglia.

Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has issued three authorization decrees for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a combined capacity of 300 MW.

The approvals cover one project in the southern region of Puglia and two in neighboring Campania.

Lightsource Renewable Energy Italy SPV 20, a subsidiary of UK-based developer Lightsource BP, received authorization to build the 100 MW/800 MWh Galatina 1 BESS project in the municipalities of Galatina and Aradeo, in Lecce province.

MASE also approved two 100 MW battery storage projects by Milan-based developer Sphera Energy in Avellino province. Through its subsidiary Sphera Ponente, the company received authorization for a 100 MW system spanning the municipalities of Andretta and Bisaccia.

A second subsidiary, Sphera Levante, was granted approval to build another 100 MW BESS project in Bisaccia.

The latest approvals follow seven battery storage authorizations totaling 812 MW issued by MASE in June and five additional approvals covering 310 MW announced in May.
