Eku Energy plans 1,600 MWh battery storage project in Germany

Eku Energy plans to commission a 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery energy storage system in Germany by the end of 2029, marking the company’s entry into the country’s energy storage market.

The four-hour battery system, named Dion, is planned for Lamspringe in Lower Saxony and is currently in an advanced stage of development. Eku Energy said the project will rank among the largest battery storage facilities in Germany once completed.

The project is expected to connect directly to the transmission grid and will be equipped with grid-forming and black-start capabilities. Eku Energy said long-term partner Fluence will supply the LFP battery systems.

The company acquired the project rights from German developer Nion and has signed an agreement under which Nion will continue developing the project through financial close. Eku Energy said it will oversee the project’s development strategy, design, and technology.

The Dion project is Eku Energy’s first investment in Germany, where the company plans to build a long-term project pipeline. It also plans to open a German office next year and is seeking additional partners for battery storage projects and long-term power offtake and energy marketing arrangements.
