Osaka Gas launches Kyocera home battery for market trading

Osaka Gas and Osaka Gas Marketing have launched sales of Kyocera’s Enerezza Plus II residential battery system, targeting newly built homes with installed solar arrays.

The companies said they also plan to launch an energy management service called Sumai Denchi EX, which would allow households to aggregate battery capacity into Japan’s balancing and capacity markets, creating a revenue stream not dependent on the feed-in tariff.

Osaka Gas said the service, targeted for launch as early as this year, would be Japan’s first such offering for newly built solar-equipped homes, citing its own research as of June 2026.

Japan opened its balancing market to household-level flexibility resources, including home batteries, in April 2026, according to Osaka Gas.

Sumitomo Forestry is named as the first homebuilder partner. The companies are developing a sales scheme that combines Sumai Denchi EX with a surplus-solar purchase arrangement and a plan to supply effectively renewable power during construction.

The Enerezza Plus II uses semi-solid, clay-type lithium-ion cells that Kyocera says are rated for 20,000 charge cycles and classified as non-hazardous under Japan’s Fire Service Act testing.

The Kyocera-Osaka Gas launch follows a wider push by Japanese utilities to draw household batteries into balancing services.

In March, Kyushu Electric Power began a residential battery demand-response pilot with Sharp-supplied home storage, while Tohoku Electric Power has been using Sharp’s PV-linked home batteries for grid balancing since late 2025.

Kyocera’s Enerezza product line, the technology behind the Enerezza Plus II, launched in 2020 as the world’s first residential battery system using 24M’s SemiSolid electrode process.
