SMA Altenso, RheinEnergie commission 62.5 MWh battery in Germany

SMA Altenso and RheinEnergie have commissioned a 24.5 MW/62.5 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in northwestern Germany.

SMA Altenso and RheinEnergie have commissioned a 24.5 MW/62.5 MWh BESS in Lower Saxony, Germany.

The battery storage facility is located in the town of Einbeck. The region that plays a key role in Germany’s north-south power flows, between areas with high wind power generation in the north and major electricity consumers in the south, according to the companies.

The system will provide grid services, including primary and secondary reserve capacity, while also participating in day-ahead and intraday electricity trading.

The project features SMA’s inverter and control technology, enabling operation across different market and grid applications. The technical scope includes eight medium-voltage power stations equipped with SMA Sunny Central Storage UP inverters, as well as 16 battery stations.

SMA Altenso acted as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the Batteriepark Einbeck project, overseeing planning, engineering, construction, and implementation of the medium-voltage connection, including switchgear and cable infrastructure.

SMA Altenso will also provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for the battery storage system during operation.
