Tata Power secures 324 MW/2,592 MWh pumped storage contract in India

Tata Power will provide 2,592 MWh of pumped hydro storage capacity from its 1 GW Bhivpuri project in western India under a 40-year energy storage services deal.

Tata Power has secured an award from Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI) to provide 324 MW/2,592 MWh of pumped hydro storage capacity from its 1 GW Bhivpuri pumped storage project in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

The capacity was awarded under SECI’s tariff-based global competitive bidding (PSP-I) for the procurement of 1.5 GW/12 GWh of pumped hydro storage capacity across India.

Under the award, Tata Power will provide energy storage services for 40 years from the scheduled commencement of supply date under an agreed fixed annual capacity charge and cycle loss framework. SECI will sign a pumped storage purchase agreement (PSPA) with Tata Power after executing pumped storage sale agreements with the buying entities.

The company is required to commence supply of storage capacity within 36 months from the effective date of the agreement.

The project will be developed under the build-own-operate (BOO) model and will provide eight hours of energy storage, enabling reliable dispatch of electricity during periods of peak demand. It will connect to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb CTU Substation, an inter-state transmission system (ISTS).
