Solar-plus-storage project in Guatemala secures 15-year PPAs for 130 MWp, 100 MWh
Spanish renewable energy developer MASPV has signed two 15-year PPAs with Guatemalan electricity distributors Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala (EEGSA) and Distribuidora de Electricidad de Oriente (Deorsa) for a 130 MWp solar project paired with a 100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The Madrid-based company has also posted $2.5 million in bank guarantees, completing the contractual phase following the project’s award.
The project will be built in the department of Zacapa and requires an investment of more than $100 million. MASPV said it expects the facility to begin operating before 2029 and describes it as Central America’s largest solar-plus-storage project.
The project will supply part of its solar generation directly to the grid while storing the remaining electricity for delivery during periods without solar generation or during periods of higher demand. The company did not disclose the battery system’s power rating.
The project was awarded under Guatemala’s PEG-5-2025 procurement, which sought up to 1,400 MW of firm capacity and associated energy under contracts of up to 15 years for EEGSA, Deorsa, and Distribuidora de Electricidad de Occidente (Deocsa). Power supply under the awarded contracts is scheduled to begin in 2030.
Spanish developer Ecoener also secured contracts in the same procurement process for the 140 MWp Cocales solar project with a 20 MW/80 MWh BESS and the 60 MWp La Hulera solar project with a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS.
MASPV develops energy projects in 10 countries, including Spain, China, Panama, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.
