Statkraft, Aquila advance hybrid BESS projects in Spain
Statkraft has procured battery equipment for a battery energy storage system (BESS) it is installing at the repowered Montes de Cierzo wind farm in Tudela, northern Spain.
The system will include six lithium-ion battery containers with 14.26 MW of power and 28.51 MWh of storage capacity, providing two hours of charge and discharge. It will be Statkraft’s first battery storage project in Spain and one of the country’s first battery hybrids paired with a repowered wind farm.
The project represents an investment of €4 million and has been selected for funding from Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which could cover up to 24% of the storage system investment.
Hithium will supply the batteries, while Ingeteam will provide the power conversion system and control platform, both manufactured in the Spanish region of Navarra.
Beyond Montes de Cierzo, Statkraft is developing 11 additional battery storage projects linked to existing renewable energy plants in Galicia, Andalusia, Navarra, and Extremadura, with a combined capacity of more than 200 MW. It is also planning two standalone battery storage projects totaling 90 MW/360 MWh.
The battery project forms part of the second phase of the Montes de Cierzo repowering program, which will replace 85 original wind turbines with 14 next-generation machines. The upgrade will increase installed capacity from 60 MW to 90 MW while approximately doubling annual generation from 145 GWh to about 300 GWh.
Meanwhile, German developer Aquila Clean Energy has secured the final permits required to add a BESS to its 38 MWp Manztierra solar plant in Ciudad Real, which has been operating since July 2024.
The developers will install a 15.62 MW/31.1 MWh battery system to improve the plant’s operational flexibility and renewable energy integration. Aquila said it is among the first battery hybrid projects at an operating solar plant in Spain to reach ready-to-build status.
Aquila Clean Energy has operated in Spain since 2018 and has developed seven renewable energy projects in Castilla-La Mancha with a combined capacity of more than 180 MW.
