Axpo signs 10-year tolling deal for 207 MW Italian battery project

Axpo has signed a 10-year tolling agreement with Zelestra for a 207 MW/830 MWh battery energy storage project in northeastern Italy.

Axpo has signed a 10-year tolling agreement with Zelestra for a 207 MW/830 MWh battery energy storage system planned in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.

The project, which will be owned, built and operated by Zelestra, is expected to provide about 830 MWh of energy storage capacity. Axpo will provide optimization services under the agreement.

Simone Rodolfi, head of origination and structured products at Axpo Italia, said the agreement is the company’s first battery storage tolling contract in Italy and could create additional opportunities in the country’s growing storage market.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commercial operations expected in 2028.

Zelestra Italy CEO Eliano Russo said the project will increase the company’s authorized battery storage portfolio in Italy to 970 MW, making it the country’s second-largest owner of permitted battery storage capacity.
