Battery storage emerges as revenue asset for industrial sites

Battery storage is taking on a broader role at industrial sites in Switzerland, providing grid services and opening up additional revenue streams from day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.

BESS Perlen AG, owned by Perlen Industrieholding AG and Valyou Investment Foundation, is investing in a 10 MW/20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Switzerland. The system, supplied by ADS-TEC Energy, will be installed at the site of paper manufacturer Perlen Papier AG, with commissioning scheduled by the end of 2026.

Beyond strengthening the site’s energy infrastructure, the battery will allow the company to turn energy storage into a new source of revenue. By storing electricity when market conditions are favorable and dispatching it when conditions are more attractive, industrial companies can make greater use of flexibility in their energy consumption and generation.

Initially, the Perlen system will primarily provide grid services that contribute to the balance and stability of the electricity system. Over time, the battery will also participate in the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets, creating additional opportunities to monetize its flexibility. Swiss energy company Wattss is responsible for the overall management of the project, from development and technical integration to participation in electricity markets.

The project illustrates the expanding role of batteries at industrial sites. Rather than serving only as a tool to secure or optimize electricity supplies, they can become economic assets in their own right, generating additional revenue. Depending on site configuration and market conditions, storage can monetize energy flexibility through multiple electricity-related revenue streams.

With the installation, Perlen aims to further transform its industrial site into an energy hub capable of actively participating in electricity markets while developing new sources of long-term value.

Geiger said the BESS will support the continued transformation of the Perlen industrial site into a modern energy hub while creating new sources of value, with energy becoming an additional economic asset for the business.
