Leag starts building 1.6 GWh battery storage system

Leag has started construction of a 400 MW/1.6 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Boxberg power plant site in Saxony, Germany. Leag Clean Power, Hyperstrong, and Siemens Energy are involved in the construction of the project, known as GigaBattery Boxberg 400.

Construction of the “GigaBattery Boxberg 400” battery storage system has officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony. The 400 MW/1,600 MWh system is being built at the Boxberg power plant site in Saxony and is part of Leag’s so-called GigawattFactory, which will include numerous large-scale PV and wind power plants as well as battery storage systems. For the project, Leag is using a six-hectare remediated site at its former Plant II.

The battery storage system is being built jointly by the main contractors Leag Clean Power, Siemens Energy, and Hyperstrong International (Germany), a subsidiary of Beijing Hyperstrong Technology. Hyperstrong will supply the lithium iron phosphate batteries, integrate the electrical systems, and construct the storage facility. The project will use the “HyperBlock III” storage system, which was specifically developed for large-scale, power plant applications.

In parallel with the battery storage system, Siemens Energy will build a new gas-insulated 380 kV switchgear system (GIS). This will provide the connection to the transmission grid operated by 50Hertz. It will also connect renewable power generation around the Boxberg power plant site to the storage system, the companies said.
