In a world of low-cost batteries, performance matters
Oversupply of lithium-ion battery precursor and active materials – and of lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, especially in China – has driven energy storage system costs down, fueling a record 330 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) shipments in 2024. ZGR battery system kept one Spanish village powered during major Iberian blackout
A 160 kW / 250 kWh standalone battery system installed by Spanish manufacturer ZGR (Zigor Corporación) ensured uninterrupted power for the village of San Vicente del Monte during a major blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula on 28 April 2025. The system, connected to the low-voltage (400 V) grid, supplied electricity to the entire village for more than five hours.

Spain proposes Andalusia get almost half of EU’s €700 million energy storage aid package
The draft rules published by Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) suggest Andalusia should receive almost €312 million ($336 million) of the €700 million disbursed by the European Union's regional development fund to drive energy storage.

Polish utility plans to add 10 GWh of energy storage projects by 2035
Polish utility PGE Group is planning to add more than 80 energy storage facilities through to 2035 to the tune of PLN 18 billion ($4.7 billion). One of these will be the 981 MWh Zarnowiec battery energy storage project, which will be supplied with locally produced LG Energy Solution's grid-scale systems.

Honduras awards 300 MWh battery storage project
The National Electric Power Company (ENEE) has selected a Chinese-Honduran consortium to design, supply, install, test, and commission a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Amarateca substation in the department of Francisco Morazán.

German home battery sales collapse but larger systems on the rise
German energy storage sales are shrinking, especially home systems, but commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale numbers are rising and the Federal Association of Energy Storage Systems (BVES) wants faster permitting and better regulation.
