Sungrow introduces PowerTitan 3.0 BESS based on 684 Ah cell, fully-liquid cooled silicon carbide PCS

The PowerTitan 3.0 Energy Storage System Platform, available in 10-feet Flex (capacity 3.45 MWh), 20-feet Class (capacity 6.9 MWh), and 30-feet Plus versions (capacity 12.5 MWh), supports durations of 2-12 hours.

Chinese inverter and energy storage system provider Sungrow has unveiled its next-generation PowerTitan 3.0 storage platform featuring the industry’s first mass-producible 684 Ah cell and an all-liquid-cooled silicon carbide (SiC) power conversion system.

The single platform supports multiple configurations, enabling broad, global application versatility. All funcional modules are standardized and can be flexibly deployed based on specific scenario needs without requiring redesign.

Shattering the constraints of fixed container sizes, PowerTitan 3.0 is offered in three versions—Flex (3.45 MWh), Class (6.9 MWh), and Plus (12.5 MWh)— offering 2- to 12-hour storage durations. The system is capable of operating in environments ranging from -40°C to 55°C and altitudes up to 5,000 metres.

The Plus version stands out with a record-high single-cabinet (thirty feet) capacity of 12.5 MWh and energy density exceeding 500 kWh/m². With a 20mm back-to-back installation design, it reduces land use by 45% and wiring costs by 10% for 1 GWh-scale deployments.

At the core of the system is Sungrow’s proprietary 684 Ah stacked battery cell, developed in partnership with leading cell manufacturer Sunwoda, a source close to Sungrow told ESS News. The cell delivers an energy density of 448 Wh/L, supports in excess of 15,000 cycles while maintaining 80% capacity.

Featuring an innovative “thermal-electrical separation” design with directional heat dissipation and patented insulation layers, the cell sets a new safety benchmark by isolating heat sources from electrical signals. This reportedly reduces the thermal runaway risk by 40%.

PowerTitan 3.0 is the first platform to deploy full-liquid-cooled SiC power conversion system at scale. The system delivers a power capacity of 450 kW per unit, achieving a conversion efficiency of 99.3% and round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 93.5%. This significantly reduces power consumption and heat generation, enhancing stability under high-load operations and even in extreme heat of 55°C, making it suitable for high-temperature regions such as the Middle East.

PowerTitan 3.0 incorporates “stem cell grid” technology, enabling microsecond-level grid sensing and GW-scale black start capability. It remains stable during rapid SCR shifts from 1 to 40, meeting the evolving needs of grid-forming scenarios and enables 20 milliseconds rapid response and 90° symmetrical/asymmetrical phase angle jump. With these functions, the product is designed to ensure reliability across all grid scenarios: generation, transmission, microgrids, and consumption endpoints.

An upgraded AI-driven thermal management system, Biomimetic Heat Balance 2.0, enables cabinet-specific temperature control strategies, reducing auxiliary power use by 20% and extending system lifespan.

Sungrow’s in-house software suite spans delivery, operations, and market participation. The delivery system cuts configuration inspection times from 17 days to 1 hour, with inspection efficiency improved by 85%. The PowerDoctor O&M platform, powered by large AI models, identifies over 30 fault types with 99% accuracy, slashing unplanned downtime by 99% and boosting maintenance efficiency by 92%.

The PowerBidder trading platform integrates BMS, PCS, and EMS systems, using AI to optimise market strategies.

Sungrow told ESS News that the released model is for China market only and the company is scheduled to launched customized versions for other global markets soon.

Industry experts say the platform’s modular architecture and integrated software-hardware solution represent a shift from bespoke engineering toward standardised, platform-based deployment models.

Sungrow sees the future of storage not merely as backup power, but as a core platform for energy management, dispatch, and trading. With AI-driven lifecycle optimization and scalable design, PowerTitan 3.0 is positioned to become a strategic node in the global energy transition.
