MET Group buys French BESS company Comax
French battery energy storage systems (BESS) developer, owner, and operator Comax is to join MET Group as the Swiss business seeks to expand its share of the European energy market.
Founded in 2003 in Aquitane, Comax operates a 29 MW portfolio of battery storage across France as well as a 170 MW portfolio of thermal systems. Comax has further battery storage projects under development in France, with projects with several hundred megawatts tipped for development. MET Group, which is purchasing 100% of Comax’s business, will aim to put these planned projects into operation in mid-2026.
Johannes Niemetz, Chairman of MET Group’s Flexibility Assets Division, explained that integrating flexible assets are “an essential part” of MET Group’s energy transition strategy.
“Our investment profile is fully aligned with the priorities of the energy transition. We are looking forward to being in the French market for flexible power generation and system services to enter and expand our portfolio in Western Europe,” he added.
MET Group has been active in the French market for some years through its wholesale and trading activities. This is its first investment in French energy infrastructure. In 2023, the group launched its subsidiary MET France, headquartered in Lyon, which primarily sells gas and electricity to small and medium-sized companies.
