Bulgaria backed by EIB for 1.6 GW of pumped storage The European Investment Bank (EIB) will conduct economic and technological feasibility studies on two Bulgarian pumped storage hydropower plants due to be operational by 2032. The projects will each add generation capacity of around 800 MW and will both come with a price tag of around €900 ($964) million.

1.4 GW Xiamen pumped storage project connected to the grid The No. 4 unit of the State Grid Fujian Xiamen Pumped Storage Power Station has successfully passed project acceptance, marking the full commissioning of the power station. The project was designed by the East China Survey and Design Institute and built by the China Hydropower No. 14 Engineering Corporation.

Australia adds 9.6 GWh pumped hydro project to its pipeline The pipeline of pumped hydro storage projects in the Australian state of Queensland continues to grow with Victorian-based renewables company BE Power announcing plans to develop an 800 MW / 9.6 GWh project at Mount Alma near Gladstone.

Nova Scotia gold mine could host PV-plus-pumped hydro storage energy hub A new partnership will investigate the viability of colocating a closed-loop pumped hydro energy storage facility with solar PV at the site of a former gold mine in Moose River in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Atlantic Mining, owner of the mine, and Natural Forces, a renewables company with 300 MW of operational capacity in Canada, are optimistic the project will be feasible.

Hybrid pumped hydro-BESS project takes shape in Finland A ‘new energy cluster in Finland’ plans to co-locate a 75 MW underground pumped storage hydroelectric (UPHS) facility and a 85 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at a mine near the town of Pyhäjärvi in central Finland. A solar park could be added in the future.
