Spanish storage system manufacturer Ionly has officially launched its Ionly XYZ 5 kWh rechargeable residential battery. The new battery was presented at the Solar & Storage Live Dubai Congress.

Alejandro Desco, CEO and co-founder of Ionly, stated that 90% of the battery’s components are produced in Europe. Key elements manufactured in Spain include the Battery Management System (BMS) electronics and proprietary software, plastic and metal structural components, wiring harnesses, and the cooling system. Active and passive safety devices, power connectors, power supplies, busbars, and user interface electronics are sourced from other European suppliers.

Desco emphasized the strategic importance of this sourcing: “Decoupling our design, manufacturing, and material sourcing from China guarantees economic viability. In our mission to reduce dependence on the Asian market, we adopt build-to-stock manufacturing for our clients, favoring inventory rotation.”

The Ionly XYZ 5 kWh utilizes LiFePO4 (LFP) technology, offering a nominal capacity of 5.43 kWh/106 Ah with a 95% Depth of Discharge (DoD). It operates within a voltage range of 43.2 – 58.4 V, with a nominal charge current of 50 A and a nominal discharge current of 100 A. The unit measures 710 mm x 710 mm x 130 mm and weighs 42 kg, featuring an IP31 protection rating. The manufacturer guarantees 6,000 cycles or 10 years (80% State of Health) under standard conditions. The system supports parallelization of up to 20 batteries, reaching 103.2 kWh (2,014 Ah) nominal capacity.

The battery is certified under IEC/EN 62619, IEC/EN 62620, UN 38.3, EU2023/1542, CE, and includes a Battery Passport. It is compatible with the communication protocols of the 20 largest PV inverter manufacturers, including Growatt, SMA, Ingeteam, and Victron, covering approximately 90% of the European low-voltage solar inverter market via CAN-BUS, RS485, or dry contact.

Ionly highlights the battery’s redundant construction, which makes it tolerant to individual cell failures. Desco noted, “Our patent-pending assembly method is focused on reparability, complies with recycling and reuse processes, being the only battery on the market with these characteristics. As intended by the latest European Directives (EU2023/1542).” The modular design also allows for cell redistribution for less demanding second-life applications.

The Ionly XYZ 5 kWh is scheduled for market release in September 2025 with an initial manufacturing capacity of 500 batteries per month. The company aims to scale production to 18,000 batteries annually through an upcoming €2 million funding round, actively seeking international investors from the photovoltaic sector.

Ionly also plans to launch commercial and industrial versions of the battery next year, with a 409.6 V and 43.2 kWh capacity. Further projects are slated for SMEs and PV plants, with a utility-scale version in a 20-foot maritime container envisioned by 2028. Pricing for the residential unit is expected around €1,900, positioned between low-cost Asian products and premium offerings, with an emphasis on local design, manufacturing, and a 48-72 hour local after-sales service with immediate replacement and a 10-year warranty.
