Skysense, BYD to deploy 300 MWh of Mexican batteries
Mexican energy storage company Skysense and BYD Energy Storage have announced they will deploy 300 MWh of battery storage capacity through 2026.
The storage capacity – the equivalent of 5,000 electric vehicle batteries – is intended to increase energy resilience by enabling fewer interruptions and less diesel use and by offering cost reduction and operational continuity to industry, shopping centers, airports and any other energy-intensive users.
The partnership will primarily use BYD’s MC Cube-T BESS product, which can be used for commercial, industrial, and large-scale application. The partners say the product offers frequency regulation, virtual power plant capability, emergency backup, reduction of demand peaks, load shifting, and net zero energy benefits.
Skysense, which works with large-scale energy generators and consumers across Latin America, designs solar-plus-battery smart microgrids to optimize energy costs, reduce emissions, guarantee operational continuity, and address power quality challenges.
The Mexican business has been working with energy and infrastructure asset management company Riverstone Holdings since 2023 to plan, engineer, install, operate, and maintain energy systems in complex, high-demand environments including airports, industrial parks and logistics centers. Skysense also offers energy-as-a-service to provide customers with energy storage benefits without upfront capital expense.
Electric vehicle company BYD (Build Your Dreams) produces cars, buses, trucks, forklifts, and railway systems as well as solar generation and energy storage equipment.
Oscar Su, vice president of BYD North America, and Skysense Founder and CEO Enrique Garduño announced the partnership, which will marry Skysense’s microgrids, storage, and solar expertise with BYD’s battery and power system technology in Latin America.
Garduño said, “At Skysense we have a very clear objective: to offer solid, profitable and sustainable energy solutions that boost the competitiveness of our customers and consolidate us as a strategic ally in their energy transition. To achieve this, having high-level alliances, like this one with BYD, is essential to take our proposal to the next level.”
Su added, “BYD … [offers] affordable solar energy, reliable storage solutions, and electrified transportation. In particular, we have almost 30 years of experience in battery research and development, which has led us to have the largest power battery production capacity in the world. Our deployment in an area with as much potential as Latin America is key.”
