Spain’s final EDRF storage tender awards 133 projects totaling 2.4 GW / 10 GWh
The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) has published the Final Proposed Resolution for the first call for aid regarding innovative energy storage projects. Co-financed by ERDF funds (2021-2027) and originally convened in May, the tender process saw its provisional results released in late October.
The final results and resolution confirms financing for 133 storage projects with an aggregate power capacity of nearly 2,400 MW and a cumulative energy capacity of approximately 10,000 MWh.
Notably, while the total headcount of projects has dropped by eight compared to the provisional resolution, the technical scope has expanded. The final list represents an increase of 223 MW and 891 MWh over the preliminary allocation. The total volume of aid granted stands at just over €827 million, leaving approximately €13 million unassigned from the €840 million pot initially available in the provisional phase.
Regional breakdown
Andalusia remains the region receiving the largest economic endowment. It secured 32 projects totaling €351 million—though this figure represents a reduction of €13.9 million compared to the preliminary list. Galicia follows, increasing its allocation by €4 million to reach €107 million across 12 projects, providing a combined capacity of 1,117 MWh.
Castilla-La Mancha is set to receive over €96 million for 11 projects. Meanwhile, Castilla y León emerged as the primary beneficiary of the appeals and consultation period; the region secured an additional €14 million, bringing its total to €56 million distributed across 10 projects.
Conversely, the Balearic Islands saw a reduction of €11 million following the exclusion of three out of the four projects initially contemplated. Allocations for Asturias and the Basque Country also registered decreases.
Top developers and biggest projects
Regarding the principal awardees, Iberdrola leads the capture of funds for large-scale and innovative storage. The utility secured 12 projects totaling 2,396 MWh and over €145 million in grants, accounting for 24% of the total aid package.
Atlantica ranks as the second-largest beneficiary, with eight projects totaling 1,517 MWh and approximately €138 million (15.3% of the total).
In third place, Rolwind secured nearly €70 million (12% of the total) via just two high-impact projects, the ST Palmosilla, the largest BESS project in the country at 200 MW / 885 MWh, and ST Cerrillo with 77 MW / 340 MWh.
Other notable awardees include SAMCA with seven projects, Ecoener with seven (all located in the Canary Islands), Aquila Capital with six, Naturgy with five, and Enel Green Power with four.
The regulatory deadline for project execution, including any potential extensions, is set for September 30, 2029.
