SPIE partners with Tesla on European rollout, including 1.4 GWh Dutch BESS project

SPIE and Tesla have signed a three-year formal agreement to build on their existing battery energy storage system (BESS) project partnership in Europe. The deal “defines the legal and operational conditions” under which SPIE will use Tesla’s Megapack technology at its BESS projects, SPIE told ESS News.

Pan-European engineering and energy services company, SPIE, signed a framework agreement with Tesla for a series of battery energy storage (BESS) projects in the region – several of which are already in progress, the company told ESS News.

SPIE and Tesla are both participating in the 1.4 GWh Mufasa BESS in the Netherlands, which will feature 372 Tesla Megapacks. SPIE, which oversees its engineering and execution, claims the project will become “the largest BESS facility in the Netherlands.”

The two companies are also involved in a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS project in France and a 50 MW/200 MWh BESS in Belgium using 53 Tesla Megapacks. SPIE told ESS News that construction commenced on the French BESS in September 2025, with commissioning planned for the end of 2026. The works include construction of a 90 kV substation for connection to the French grid.

Tesla and SPIE have formalized their existing relationship with the signing of a framework agreement, announced December 15. The deal has a term of three years with the option to renew.

The agreement applies to all European subsidiaries of SPIE group, and according to the French-headquartered company it “defines the legal and operational conditions” under which SPIE will deploy Tesla’s Megapack technology at its BESS projects and “provides a harmonized framework that facilitates international coordination, reducing contract negotiation times and promoting the scaling up of deployments, without any prior commitments or volume targets.”

Each individual project will be subject to contracts with each SPIE subsidiary under the terms of the deal with Tesla. SPIE said the deal with the United States-based energy storage giant “reflects the confidence that a key global player in the energy sector has placed in SPIE’s technical skills and pan-European organization.”

SPIE can be involved throughout the entire value chain of its projects and provides EPC and Balance of Plant (BoP) services through its subsidiaries across Europe. “With our technical solutions, we are the comprehensive partner for the energy transition: we make energy grids fit for the future, integrate renewable energies, and sustainably strengthen supply security and grid stability with intelligent storage solutions such as BESS. With our international expertise, we ensure that all work is carried out consistently and in accordance with strict international standards. The projects position SPIE as a key player in the field of energy storage in Europe, which is a crucial component of the energy transition,” the company said.

Tesla’s Megapacks are deployed in BESS projects around the world, from Chile to Australia to the United States. In September 2025, it unveiled the latest generation of Megapack technology at RE+ in Las Vegas.
