Neoen to build France’s biggest BESS at 496 MWh, enters Japanese market
Coinciding with the French president’s visit to Japan, French renewable giant Neoen announced two landmark battery energy storage (BESS) projects, including its first battery in Japan and the biggest battery in France, which it will build in collaboration with Japan’s Nidec.
Michigan approves 1.3 GW BESS portfolio, including contested Oracle data center assets
Approved DTE Electric storage facilities include one asset backed by a 20-year tolling agreement, two self-build contracts and three batteries to serve an Oracle-owned data center. The energy regulator has denied a petition from the state’s attorney general to revisit BESS approvals.

Fraunhofer IEE calls for “grid-forming readiness” in distribution networks and BESS
A position paper from the Fraunhofer IEE proposes preparing large battery storage systems in the medium-voltage grid for grid-forming functions at an early stage. The "Grid-Forming Readiness" concept aims to close the regulatory gap between current planning and operation and future, as yet unknown, requirements and demands for grid-forming functions.

Wooderson hybrid 3.6 GWh DC-coupled storage project gets go ahead in Australia
The Wooderson project combines 450 MW of solar PV and 3.6 GWh of battery energy storage (BESS) with an eight hour capacity on a DC-coupled setup. It is one of a series of similar large-scale projects undergoing environmental assessment in Australia at the moment.

South Korea to invest $223 million in next-generation distributed grid, including ESS
The South Korean government has announced plans to invest KRW 321 billion ($222.6 million) in 2026 to upgrade regional distribution networks, deploy 85 energy storage systems, and expand solar integration while piloting microgrids and market reforms.
