Sungrow secures 4.4 GWh BESS supply deal in the UK
Chinese energy storage giant Sungrow has signed a landmark agreement with UK-based Fidra Energy for the supply of 4.4 GWh energy storage systems, marking a significant milestone in Europe’s renewable energy transition.
The partnership will see the development of two standalone energy storage projects – Thorpe Marsh (3.3GWh) and West Burton C (1.1GWh), which are expected to begin construction in 2025.
A total of 880 units of Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems will be deployed across the sites. Once operational, the projects will integrate with the UK’s high voltage grid network, offering ancillary services and participating in the power market. Together, they are expected to provide electricity to approximately 1.1 million UK households.
Upon completion, the Thorpe Marsh project will surpass Belgium’s Green Turtle facility (700MW/2800MWh), currently under construction, to become Europe’s largest energy storage station.
The PowerTitan 2.0 system, Sungrow’s flagship containerized solution, features lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and has a capacity of 5 MWh per 20-foot container. With its simplified system design and grid-forming technology, PowerTitan 2.0 is said to enhance operational efficiency, bolster grid stability, and ensure long-term reliability. The system also incorporates Sungrow’s second-generation intelligent liquid cooling technology, which optimizes energy use, minimizes maintenance, and guarantees safety during operation.
Sungrow’s latest UK deal builds on an impressive streak of large-scale international orders. In 2024 alone, the company has secured at least 10 major energy storage agreements with a combined capacity exceeding 13 GWh. These deals span diverse markets, including Saudi Arabia, Belgium, the UK, the US, and Thailand. Notably, Sungrow inked a 7.8 GWh supply contract in July with Saudi Arabia’s ALGIHAZ, encompassing over 1,500 PowerTitan 2.0 systems for three energy storage projects.
Fidra Energy, backed by leading energy infrastructure investor EIG, has a stated goal of spearheading grid-scale energy storage projects to support Europe’s clean energy transition. Fidra CEO Chris Elder emphasized the critical role of storage technologies in achieving this vision, stating:
“Storage is a proven, cost-effective, and flexible technology essential to Europe’s energy transition. Our strategic focus is to introduce large-scale storage systems to the market through grid-side projects. Sungrow’s grid-forming energy storage technology will help us meet our growth objectives in the UK and across Europe.”
