The Chilean division of French energy company Engie has announced authorization from the CEN for the commercial operation of Engie Chile’s 68 MW/418 MWh Tamaya battery energy storage system (BESS) in Tocopilla, Antofagasta.

BESS Tamaya is located where the company’s former diesel plant once operated.

The 152 battery containers will store energy generated by Engie Chile’s 114 MW Tamaya Solar Plant, which began injecting electricity into the grid in December 2021 and started commercial operation two months later.

The developer said BESS Tamaya will provide enough energy to meet five hours of National Electric System peak electricity demand for 50,800 homes.

In March 2024, Engie Chile’s 139 MW/638 MWh BESS Coya began commercial operation and the company is building two further energy storage sites: the 116 MW/660 MWh BESS Tocopilla, located where the old coal-fired units of the Tocopilla Thermal Complex operated; and the 48 MW/264 MWh BESS Capricornio project. Once operational, Engie Chile will have 1.98 GWh of installed BESS capacity.
