Giga Storage enters German market with 1.4 GWh BESS acquisition

Giga Storage has announced its entry into the German battery storage market. The Dutch company said on Monday that it has acquired the 350 MW/ 1,400 MWh GIGA Albatross project near Merzen in Lower Saxony.
The investment amounts to approximately €300 million, a Giga Storage spokesperson said in response to an inquiry from pv magazine. The battery storage facility is expected to begin commercial operation in 2028, the spokesperson added.
Once commissioned, the battery storage facility will provide grid stabilization services. It will allow for an increased integration of renewable energies and contribute to frequency control and local congestion management.
The acquisition of the GIGA Albatross project represents an important building block for the internationalization of the Dutch business. The battery storage facility fits seamlessly into Giga Storage’s vertically integrated model – from project development through engineering and construction to long-term operation.
GIGA Storage will actively participate in the further development of Project Albatross by providing development capital, deep technical expertise, and operational know-how, with the goal of bringing the project to construction-ready status, the company said.
The project seller, Isenau Projects, was founded in 2022. It specializes in the development of large-scale battery storage systems with capacities of 250 MW and above, from the initial planning phase to construction readiness. According to the company, it currently has a project pipeline totaling 1.7 GW in Germany.
