Moll Batterien garners more than $25 million for sodium-ion battery plant in Germany
Moll Batterien GmbH is building a production facility for sodium-ion batteries in the Bavarian town of Lichtenfels in South Germany. Initially, the plant is to have an annual capacity of 1 GWh and create 126 new jobs and training places. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2026.
On Thursday, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that it is promoting the construction of the production facility. In total, the state will provide funds of €19.65 million through the BKR federal regulation Transformation Technologies. In addition, there will be €2.52 million euros from the EU’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This will mean that €22.17 million in funding will go to the initiative. According to Moll, the investment amount for the project is a total of about €103 million.
“A real growth market is just emerging here: sodium instead of scarce raw materials – this is green innovation from Bavaria for Bavaria and far beyond. This is how successful energy transition looks, creating jobs and strengthening our location,” said Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger at the funding decision handover.
