CATL’s Tener Stack debuts in Latin America with Acciona’s 1 GWh Chile project

A newly signed agreement includes the integration of a 1 GWh battery storage system for the 238 MWp Malgarida solar park in the Atacama desert, which is scheduled to become operational in early 2027.

Spanish company Acciona Energía has announced the signing of a contract with Chinese manufacturer CATL for the supply of 1 GWh of storage capacity. This system will be integrated into the 238 MWp Malgarida photovoltaic park, located in the Atacama Desert, which has been operational since 2021. The National Energy Commission has declared the BESS system under construction, and it is scheduled to enter operation in early 2027.

The project involves the installation of CATL’s 9 MWh Tener Stack ultra-large-scale utility batteries, a solution that, according to the manufacturer, reduces construction costs by around 30% by requiring less surface area and fewer auxiliary equipment for assembly. It is stated that this will be the first implementation of this technology in Latin America.

With 1 GWh of capacity, the system will allow the solar production from Malgarida to be stored during hours of highest irradiation and dispatched at night or during periods of higher demand. The report adds that this scheme improves the plant’s delivery profile, reduces curtailment during hours of solar oversupply, and displaces thermal generation.

Acciona Energía states that it has 922 MW installed in Chile, distributed across three wind farms, Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW), and Tolpán Sur (84 MW), and five photovoltaic plants, including El Romero Solar (246 MWp), Usya (64 MWp), Almeyda (62 MWp), and Malgarida itself (238 MWp). Additionally, it is developing a portfolio of three additional storage projects linked to solar assets totaling 1.5 GWh.
