Centrica has a very good week in Sweden, optimizing 110 MW of BESS
UK-based energy company Centrica has had a busy week in Sweden, bringing online two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects which it will optimize itself, while also being chosen to optimize a third project
First, two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Borlänge in southern Sweden, and north of Stockholm, have been brought online with a combined power of 40MW. The projects were delivered by energy solutions provider Omexom as the EPC. The duration of the batteries wasn’t published though the company said the annual output was expected to be “around 21,900 MWh,” or 60 MWh per day.
Centrica Energy, a subsidiary and the energy trading arm of the company, will optimize the assets, as part of 770MW of BESS under contract across Europe.
At the same time, Centrica Energy said it had signed an optimization agreement with Ånge Storage Solutions for a 70 MW / 160 MWh battery project in Ånge, Sweden, also located in the south of the country, though somewhat north of Borlänge. It is expected to be commissioning in the current quarter of 2026 and join the SE2 bidding zone.
The project developer is one jointly established by Delta Capacity, a Swiss-based developer of utility-scale battery storage systems, and Wood & Co, a leading European investment bank and asset manager.
Centrica Energy reps called it the start of a partnership with Delta Capacity.
What they said:
Cassim Mangerah, managing director of Centrica Energy, said: “Our partnership with Delta Capacity strengthens our growing footprint in the Nordics and highlights the vital role that flexibility assets play in delivering a stable, renewable-led energy system. With the 160 MWh Ånge BESS project, we’re applying our full optimization capabilities in Sweden – helping unlock value for our partners while supporting the development of a more resilient and decarbonised power market.”
Kristian Gjerløv-Juel, VP of renewable energy trading and optimization for Centrica Energy, added: “It’s been a pleasure working with Delta Capacity on this agreement. It shows how combining robust commercial structures with advanced optimisation capabilities can accelerate the delivery of flexible assets to the market.”
Patrik Hes, Delta Capacity CEO: “Ånge is a flagship project for Delta Capacity and reflects our commitment to building large-scale battery storage where it is most needed. As renewable generation accelerates in the Nordics, grid flexibility becomes increasingly critical. Partnering with Centrica Energy allows us to combine our expertise in battery storage development with their leading optimization capabilities to ensure the asset can deliver maximum value to the Swedish power system and the market.”
