French developer TagEnergy has brought its 240 MW/480 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Cernay-lès-Reims into commercial operation, making it the largest operational storage asset in France.

The project, located in the Marne department in the Grand Est region, uses Tesla Megapack technology and was developed in partnership with French transmission system operator RTE, the SICAE de la Somme et du Cambraisis cooperative, and local stakeholders including the municipality of Cernay-lès-Reims and the Grand Reims urban community. The asset is jointly owned with Banque des Territoires, which is actively supporting BESS infrastructure development in France.

TagEnergy said the Cernay system represents more than double the capacity of the second-largest operational storage system in France. The country’s installed battery storage capacity has grown from less than 50 MW five years ago to approximately 1.5 GW at the start of 2026.

Franck Woitiez, chairman and CEO of TagEnergy, said the commissioning marks not only the arrival of the company’s first operational asset in France but also reinforces its long-term commitment to delivering the energy storage projects the country needs.
