PGE hosts groundbreaking for 400 MW project in Poland, Fluence supplying Smartstack BESS
Polish utility PGE has seen work begin at its Gryfino battery energy storage project, an 800 MWh capacity project located close to the German border.
The project is near the town of Gryfino, just south of the major Polish border town of Szczecin, and near where the Oder river splits, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in 2028.
Fluence will supply 94 Smartstack units, each configured in its highest density of 10 MWh. While this totals 940 MWh, the project may include an overbuild to ensure supply. ESS News has contacted Fluence for further information.
For site buildout, SPEC BAU Polska and El Professional will handle turnkey engineering and construction.
Fluence’s contracted Smartstack portfolio in Poland now totals around 1.5 GWh, with projects also in Trzebinia in the south, and Osiek in the south-east.
What they said:
“The Gryfino project demonstrates what can be achieved when Polish engineering and construction expertise is combined with proven global storage technology. We are proud to work with El Professional and Fluence to deliver a strategically important asset that will strengthen the flexibility and resilience of Poland’s power system.” — Dawid Kliś, President of the Management Board SPEC BAU Polska
“This battery storage facility is underpinned by a joint and long-term focus on safe, reliable operation. We look forward to working with Spec Bau and Fluence to integrate one of the region’s most significant battery storage facilities and support its performance over the long term.” — Łukasz Stelmach, Vice President of the Executive Board, El Professional
“Gryfino is yet another landmark project for storage in Poland as Fluence’s third large-scale BESS build-out following the recent Trzebinia and Osiek deployments. In all, we have contracted roughly 1.5 GWh in Poland, delivering our most advanced Smartstack designs. Through close cooperation and partnership with both Spec Bau and El Professional, we are combining our technology with their experienced Polish execution teams to deliver critical energy infrastructure that will support renewable integration, provide greater system flexibility and improved energy security for years to come.” — Aric Zurek, Chief of Sales, Future Markets, Fluence.
