Kazakhstan mega wind site will feature 600 MWh battery

Chinese energy storage, wind power, and green hydrogen equipment manufacturer Envision Energy has revealed a 1 GW wind farm planned in Central Asia will include a 300 MW/600 MWh BESS.

Envision made the revelation after signing a deal at Kazakhstan Energy Week, in Astana, to supply wind turbines for the Mirny wind farm the company described as the nation’s first renewable energy project.

The Mirny site is under development by Aktos Energy along with Kazakh state-owned oil and gas companies Samruk-Energo JSC and Kaz Munay Gas and French energy giant and oil supermajor TotalEnergies. The site is set to supply more than a million households with 4 TWh of clean electricity annually, Envision said in a press release issued on Friday to announce the wind turbine supply deal.

The Chinese manufacturer will supply 124 of its 6.5 MW turbines with the first equipment due on site late next year and construction also set to start in 2026.

Envision said Kazakhstan wants renewables to account for 15% of its energy mix by 2030, en route to a carbon neutral economy by 2060.

Envision General Manager of Asia and Africa Markets John Lee said, “The Mirny wind project stands as a landmark example of how innovation and cross-border collaboration can come together to deliver clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale.”
