Northern Europe’s largest solar-plus-battery park powers up

The project marks only the first step in battery storage deployment for Danish renewable energy developer European Energy, which plans to add more than 1 GW of battery capacity across Europe.

European Energy has powered up the Kvosted solar and battery park in Denmark. By integrating an existing solar park with a 200 MWh battery energy storage system, the project has become the largest solar-plus-storage facility in Northern Europe.

The solar park has been operational since 2022, with battery modules installed within the existing site. European Energy completed the battery works in just seven months, covering full installation, electrical integration with the solar plant and the grid, and the construction of supporting infrastructure.

Following energisation, the project will now enter a commissioning phase, during which the battery system’s technical components will be prepared for full commercial operation.

“The energising of the Kvosted solar and battery park marks the beginning of European Energy’s large-scale implementation of yet another technology. This will increase during 2026 with large-scale batteries expected to come into operation,” says Mads Lykke Andersen, Head of Technology Development at European Energy.

Solar power already plays a central role in Denmark’s electricity mix, at times covering more than 60% of national demand on days with high irradiation. This underscores the growing need for energy storage to smooth production fluctuations and support grid stability.

“In the future, we will place strong emphasis on batteries across our project portfolio. Kvosted solar and battery park is a project where we show that the roll-out of battery systems is now beginning in earnest,” says Thorvald Spanggaard, EVP and Head of Project Development at European Energy. “Towards 2027, we will across our European Markets install more than 1 GW of battery capacity. This development will mean that our energy facilities will be able to store electricity so it can be used when there is the best match between supply and demand for power.”

Danske Commodities serves as the balance responsible party (BRP) for the Kvosted Solar Park and will also optimise the co-located Kvosted Battery Park. The project represents the first co-located renewables and BESS asset in the energy trading company’s portfolio.
