Greenvolt opens 200 MW battery storage plant in Poland

Portugal-based Greenvolt Power has inaugurated one of Poland’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS), with a second facility of the same size expected online by year-end.

The facility has a power rating of 200 MW and a storage capacity of 800 MWh, enough to discharge at full power for about four hours, and connects to the national transmission grid at 110 kV.

From 2028, the project will participate in Poland’s capacity market under a 17-year contract with a capacity obligation of 170 MW, equivalent to 85% of the facility’s power rating, according to Greenvolt.

The system features lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology supplied by BYD Energy Storage, with P&Q serving as general contractor. It comprises 196 containerized battery modules and 49 containerized transformer stations, and can respond to grid operator signals within seconds. Greenvolt said the system has an expected operating life of more than 20 years.

Turośń Kościelna and the nearby Ełk project trace back to a March 2025 agreement between Greenvolt and BYD Energy Storage to develop up to 1.6 GWh of battery storage capacity in Poland. Turośń Kościelna appears to be the first project in that pipeline to reach commercial operation. Ełk is expected to follow by the end of the year, with the larger, 600 MW/2.4 GWh Siedlce project still in development.

Greenvolt Power CEO João Manso Neto said growing electrification and renewable deployment are increasing the need for grid flexibility, and described Poland as a market where utility-scale storage has a particularly important role to play.

The inauguration follows Greenvolt’s commissioning of the 99.8 MW/288.6 MWh Buj battery storage system in Hungary in June, as the country’s largest operational BESS.

In Poland’s main capacity market auction for the 2028 delivery year, 33 electrochemical energy storage facilities secured contracts totaling more than 1.7 GW of combined capacity obligation, with storage accounting for 15% of total contracted capacity, according to Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office.

Greenvolt Power, part of KKR-owned Greenvolt Group, has a total pipeline of 12.8 GW across onshore wind, solar and battery storage, of which battery storage accounts for 5 GW, according to the company. In Poland, as of the end of June 2026, the company’s portfolio included 2,595 MW of energy storage projects, 657 MW of solar PV and 238 MW of wind, and it expects to invest approximately €800 million ($921.7 million) in Polish renewable energy assets by year-end.
